The Governor General is starting a national campaign aimed at getting more people to volunteer for good causes.
David Johnston’s My Giving Moment campaign wants to encourage everyone, but especially young people, to commit time, talent and money to helping the less fortunate.
Canadians are charitable, Johnston says, but the country’s volunteers are older and aging and that’s a concern.
The idea is to encourage the young to pick up the slack.
A recent Statistics Canada report found that while volunteerism is growing, the number of donated hours have hit a plateau and 10 per cent of volunteers do more than half the work.
Johnston says his campaign will use social media to appeal to charity-minded young people.
